Catbaloganons attend slaughterhouse operation management seminar

Meat vendors, dealers, and butchers recently attended the Slaughterhouse Operation Management Orientation Seminar (SOMOS) organized by the City Veterinary Office in partnership with National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).

The National Meat Inspection Service is the specialized regulatory agency in the Department of Agriculture that is the country’s sole national controlling authority on all matters pertaining to meat inspection and hygiene.

Currently there are no registered or accredited slaughterhouse under NMIS within the region but Catbalogan City has recently completed its abattoir at Barangay Mercedes after availing funding and technical assistance under the Meat Establishment Improvement Program (MEIP) of NMIS.

Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan was personally present to extend her commitment to the said initiative, which started during her father’s term now City Councilor to institutionalize the said public facility in order to ensure a safe and clean service to all consumers.

Slaughterhouses in the country are categorized as “A,” “AA” and “AAA”: “A” slaughterhouses are those allowed to cater within city or municipality where they are located; while pork from “AA” slaughterhouses is suitable for domestic consumption; and “AAA” slaughterhouses are those with facilities and operational procedures appropriate for the domestic and international markets.

Catbalogan is targeting to secure a AA grade abattoir in order to cater to nearby municipalities and cities within the province.
