Some 26 members of the Catbalogan Ambulant Vendors Association (CAVA) recently received their Nego Kart or Negosyo-sa-Kariton, a project of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
Said Nego Karts were turned-over last December 27, 2012 at the City Plaza by no less than Catbalogan City Mayor, Coefredo “Tekwa” Uy along with DOLE Samar Field Office Representative and assisted by City Cooperative Officer Mr. Vivencio Eslopor II and former City Administrator and President of Catbalogan City Hotel and Restaurant Owners Association Ms. Herminia “Eday” Cabral.
Apart from the actual push cart received by the vendors, they will also be receiving P3,000.00 worth of goods through the City Cooperative Office to serve as their additional capital to their various small businesses.
The Negosyo sa Kariton (Nego-Kart) project is one of the DOLE’s Priority Projects, which is intended to provide decent livelihood mainly for the benefit of marginal workers in the country’s informal sector, specifically the ambulant workers in major cities of the country. Each participating local government units shares a percentage as a counterpart to the over-all livelihood project.

Starting December, Mayor Coefredo “Tekwa” Uy is personally overseeing the on-going installation of LED lamp posts around the streets of Catbalogan, replacing the old halogen bulbs. The move to install LED Streetlights as a replacement to the existing halogen bulbs is aimed at reducing the electrical consumption of the city and to increase the illumination in the city. Most importantly, it is geared to implement an energy-efficient streetlighting program not only to reduce carbon greenhouse emissions but also to augment safety
security of the city.
Catbalogan City has an existing 3,179 streetlights and 1,238 electric post powered by Samar Electric Cooperative II (SAMELCO II) with an estimated monthly 71,518 kwh average consumption which has so far energized 45 out of the 57 barangays of the city per information from the City Planning and Development Office.
Government of Catbalogan considers the importance of effective and efficient energy consumption in various government facilities in boosting the economic progress of the city and maintaining these infrastructure facilities is one of the top priorities of the City Government.
