Catbalogan City takes on 2014 Seal of Good Local Governance

Formerly known as the Seal of Good Housekeeping (SGH), which Catbalogan City was a recipient in 2012 for its sterling adherence to transparency and accountability in the use of public funds by delivering basic services that are responsive to people’s needs, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) is scaling up the initiative into the Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG).

The SGLG is a continued challenge for local governments to perform better, and ultimately, achieve a

desirable condition where local governments: (a) Sustain the practice of transparency and accountability in the use of public funds; (b) Prepare for challenges posed by disasters; (c) Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of vulnerable and marginalised sectors of society; (d) Encourage investment and employment; (e) Protect constituents from threats to life and security; and (f) Safeguard the integrity of the environment.

City Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan recently met with the concerned department heads to discuss the said participation of the city. The orientation, which was facilitated by the City Local Government Operations Office revealed the many requirements to be complied by the different offices.

A Regional Assessment Team (RAT) is set to visit all the cities and municipalities to verify and validate all the information and data, which must pass all the three core assessment, namely: Good Financial Housekeeping, Disaster Preparedness, and Social Protection; and at least one essential assessment area, namely: Business-friendliness and Competitiveness, Peace and Order, or Environmental Management.

Barangay Health Consultation – Brgy. Pupua

The Office of the City Health started the month of May with their regular Barangay Health Consultation last May 02, 2014 at Barangay Pupua with free medical consultation, free medicines and free circumcision.

Nearly 20 school-aged children were circumcised and nearly 200 residents availed of the consultation and medical mission.

The said activity served as a drumbeat for the month-long scheduled Barangayan 2014, which will bring to barangays several basic social services offered by concerned offices of the City Government of Catbalogan as initiated by City Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan.

The said initiative was aimed at bringing closer to constituents the basic social services as part of the commitment of Mayor Step towards an inclusive, participative, transparent and empowering form of local governance.
