Catbalogan City pays homage and salute to the Philippine Flag

As the symbol of independence and the freedom from oppression that was first hoisted and waived some 119 years ago, the Philippine flag today is our symbol of hope and unity.

The City Government of Catbalogan on June 12, 2017 organized its short but meaningful program for the 119th Declaration of Philippine Independence joining the whole nation in honoring the flag and the forefathers who fought blood, sweat and tears to free our nation from the oppressors and invaders.

One of the highlights of the said program was the cultural and historical presentation of secondary and tertiary schools in the city that depicted the “Evolution of the Philippine Flag” as facilitated by the Division of Catbalogan City, Department of Education along with the City Tourism, Culture, Arts and Information Office along with the City Youth Development Office.

The raising of the flag and the singing of the Philippine National Anthem was lead by City Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan along with representatives from the 8th Infantry Division, Philippine Army; Philippine National Police; Philippine Coast Guard; Bureau of Fire Protection; Bureau of Jail Management and Penology; City Officials; City Departments; Deped Catbalogan City Division; Samar State University; Mt. Huraw Lodge No. 98; and other guests.

A tribute to the Philippine Flag was made by members and officers of the Mt. Huraw Lodge No. 98 Free and Accepted Masons that highlighted the flag’s history as “shaped by the strong hands of time, given life by freedom-loving people and blessed language at the helm of nations…”

Ending the formal program was Mayor Step independence day message that anchored on this year’s theme of “Kalayaan 2017: Pagbabagong Sama-Samang Balikatin” and that freedom is of the past, the current and the tomorrow that awaits, stating that “Una, ang kalayaan ay makakamtan kung sama sama tayong magsasakrispyo at mag aalay ng kung ano mang maiaambag natin. Ito ay tumutukoy sa nakaraan. Pangalawa, ang kalayaan ay makakamtan ng lubusan kung ito ay nagdudulot ng reporma, pagbabago at transpormasyon ng ating mga kumunidad at boung bansa. Ito ay tumutukoy sa kasalukuyan at hinaharap.”

She further reminded everyone that this annual celebration was formed and established with difficulties and sacrifices and this country shall remain free and progressive if each and everyone shall strive, struggle and sacrifice and that “Ang Araw ng Kalayaan ay nararapat lamang ng sumimbolo ng pagbabago na sama sama nating babalikatin.”

This eventful celebration served as a prelude to Catbalogan City’s 10th Charter Anniversary this 16th of June, emphasizing the lessons from the struggles and the learnings from the challenges as it steps forward to development, farther into betterment and further into advancement.

Catbalogan City prepares for 2018 operations

In preparation for the upcoming 2018 operations, heads of city departments and program units of Catbalogan City Government were in Bataan for a series of planning, budgeting, procurement updating, program assessment, and benchmarking as initiated by City Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan.

Anchored on a participative, transparent and empowered local governance, Mayor Step is strongly leading and aligning all programs, projects and activities towards a responsive intervention catering to all Catbaloganons and with emphasis on vulnerable groups and key sectors.

The Municipality of Mariveles, City of Balara, and the Provincial Government of Bataan hosted several learning opportunities and immersions on their various industries and
historical sites that served as learning engagements and partnership opportunities for Catbalogan City.

Believing that local governance is a shared task and that knowledge is best shared, activities such as this is a chance for growing cities like Catbalogan to experience first-hand the best practices and key strategies that can be fitted to Catbalogan City’s own challenges.

Catbalogan engages men on anti-VAWC project

Catbalogan City’s Gender Focal Point System (GFPS) celebrates Father’s Day through a series of public fora on male involvement for gender equality and women’s rights and organizing of Men Opposed VAW Everywhere or MOVE.

MOVE is an organization of men who committed themselves to be actively involved in the elimination of VAW and specifically seeks to speak out against VAW and formulate male involvement and actions against VAWC.

The project will roll out in barangays, academe, government agencies within the month of June (considered as father’s month) and expected to popularize this advocacy down to the communities.

These are being led by the City Social Welfare and Development Office in coordination with the City Gender and Development Council now replaced by GFPS as fully supported by Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan. “Because gender and development is not just about women and our rights, our partners and counterparts — the men — are crucial in the success of this intervention” Mayor Step shares.

Mayor Step considers GAD as one of her flagship programs being an advocate herself and believer of women empowerment as an inclusive and transformative initiative that will address the current social problems that societies face.
