Catbalogan joins 2017 National Tourism Week and World Tourism Day 2017

The City Government of Catbalogan through the City Tourism, Culture, Arts and Information Office (CTCAIO) joins the nation in observing the 2017 National Tourism Week during the last week of September and the World Tourism Day 2017.

The said observance is mandated under Presidential Proclamation No. 894 issued on October 4, 1996, which is geared towards promoting, encouraging and developing tourism as a major national socio-economic activity, which is also anchored on the observance of the worldwide tourism day celebrated on the 27th day of September of every year as declared by the World Tourism Organization through Proclamation No. 1942 dated February 1, 1980.

This also coincides with the declaration of the United Nations through its General Assembly that identified the year 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development recalling the potential of tourism to advance the universal 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The International Year aims to support a change in policies, business practices and consumer behavior towards a more sustainable tourism sector than can contribute effectively to the SDGs.

Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan endorses and supports this advocacy as prioritized under one of her pillars of development, which is “Turismo tatagan du-on” that puts emphasis on tourism not just as an economic drive to address poverty but a solution to achieving sustainable development among its people and of the city as a whole.

Catbalogan City has already implemented activities and projects under several key programs that are geared towards achieving a balance between economy, environment and the society anchored on its heritage and cultural identity believing that the Catbaloganons plays a great role in this road to sustainable development.
