Catbalogan rolls out first module of Cultural Heritage Mapping

City Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan through the City Tourism, Culture, Arts and Information Office convened last October 14, 2017 select primary and secondary teachers under the Division of Catbalogan City of the Department of Education for the roll-out of the Cultural Heritage Mapping Project of the Provincial Government of Samar.

The said project was being implemented for all 24 municipalities and 2 cities under the province and in coordination with the UST Graduate School – Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics (UST GS – CCCPET) and will map all natural heritage, built heritage, movable and intangible heritage and others covered under the said project.

An estimated of nearly 100 school teachers were identified to map all barangays of the city and to be assisted by the barangay officials as well as city scholars being sponsored by the city government.

“Tanan nga mga mauswag nga ciudad ha bug-os nga kalibutan, nasusukol it kamauswag ha pagkilala hit ira gin-agian o history, mga kalungganayan o treasures, ngan iba pa nga magpapakilala kun ano an mayda hira,” Mayor Step shares the importance of heritage to the development of any city.

Mayor Step further emphasized that by knowing our heritage will we learn to appreciate, to care and to protect for this generation and for the next.

Cooperative Month 2017

International Day of the Girl 2017

The City Government of Catbalogan through the City Youth Development Office – CYDO – Catbalogan City joins the world in celebrating the 2017 International Day of the Girl (IDG) on October 11, 2017.

With the theme “The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030”, this celebration is geared towards highlighting issues concerning the gender inequality facing young girls.

There are nearly 600 million girls aged 10 to 19 in the world today, each with limitless individual potential, however they are disappearing from public awareness and the international development agenda.

This year is the 5th year of celebrating the IDG and Catbalogan City supports this advocacy and recognizes the importance of transforming the risks and deprivations girls face into pathways towards a better life and a better future for our communities.

Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan herself having two young girls of her own believes in the great potential that our young Catbaloganons possess to shape the community that they will inherit in the future.

Catbalogan councilor attends world mobility congress in Taiwan

City Councilor Beethoven “Bembot” Bermejo was Catbalogan City’s representative last October 02-04, 2017 to the Ecomobility World Festival 2017 and Ecomobility World Congress 2017 in Koahsiung, Chinese Taipei by invitation ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, which Catbalogan is an active member.

The Ecomobility World Congress 2017 Kaohsiung series enables local and international actors, united by a shared interest in sustainable transportation, to come together to share good practices and spark synergies in a setting that promotes creative collaboration, local initiatives and the EcoMobility agenda under the theme of “Liveable, Shared and Intelligent: A Platform for Ecomobile Change.”

The EcoMobility World Festival is a concept initiated by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability as a challenge for visionary city leaders to take up. The concept is based on depicting the future of mobility in real time with real people in a real city for an entire calendar month. In this one month cities undergoing the EcoMobility festival project shall encourage the use of ecomobility in the neighbourhood, by discouraging use of personal automobiles.

“This is one opportunity for Catbalogan City to learn from other cities on how they implemented ecological mobility as a sustainable development measure, which our city needs to address” Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan shares.

Councilor Bermejo also sits as an Ex-Officio Board Member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of the Provincial Government of Samar being the Provincial Federation President of the Philippine Councilors League (PCL) while sitting as the Vice-Chairperson of the Publications and Communications Committee as one of the standing committees of the National PCL.

Catbalogan City is currently formalizing its EcoMobility Plan as part of its commitment to sustainable development with the help of ICLEI and with the abled leadership of Mayor Step.

Catbaloganons attend slaughterhouse operation management seminar

Meat vendors, dealers, and butchers recently attended the Slaughterhouse Operation Management Orientation Seminar (SOMOS) organized by the City Veterinary Office in partnership with National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).

The National Meat Inspection Service is the specialized regulatory agency in the Department of Agriculture that is the country’s sole national controlling authority on all matters pertaining to meat inspection and hygiene.

Currently there are no registered or accredited slaughterhouse under NMIS within the region but Catbalogan City has recently completed its abattoir at Barangay Mercedes after availing funding and technical assistance under the Meat Establishment Improvement Program (MEIP) of NMIS.

Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan was personally present to extend her commitment to the said initiative, which started during her father’s term now City Councilor to institutionalize the said public facility in order to ensure a safe and clean service to all consumers.

Slaughterhouses in the country are categorized as “A,” “AA” and “AAA”: “A” slaughterhouses are those allowed to cater within city or municipality where they are located; while pork from “AA” slaughterhouses is suitable for domestic consumption; and “AAA” slaughterhouses are those with facilities and operational procedures appropriate for the domestic and international markets.

Catbalogan is targeting to secure a AA grade abattoir in order to cater to nearby municipalities and cities within the province.

Catbalogan joins the celebration of the National Statistics Month 2017

The City Government of Catbalogan joins the nation in celebrating the 2017 National Statistics Month for the month of October.

Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647, “Declaring the Month of October of Every Year as the National Statistics Month”, the nationwide observation is aimed to: (a) promote, enhance, and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of the society; and (b) elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.

This year’s NSM celebration will carry the theme “Facts and Figures for the Future: Statistics for Evidence-Based Decisions Towards AmBisyonNatin 2040.” The theme reflects the important role of reliable statistics and factual information in determining appropriate strategies for tracking our progress towards AmBisyonNatin 2040, where all Filipinos are envisioned to enjoy a matatag, maginhawa, at panatagnabuhay.
