Catbalogan City Airport readies its first commercial flight

By the initiative of City Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan, a team was recently sent to the regional office of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines(CAAP) in Tacloban City to finalize the coordination for the operationalization of Catbalogan’s Buri Airport.

The team was composed of officers from the City Mayor, City Legal, City Investment Promotions, and the City Tourism, Culture, Arts and Information that are assisting the scheduled operation of Air Juan for its initial flight route from Cebu by the end of November or early of December 2017.

Air Juan is a Filipino company that operates seaplanes, land planes and helicopters providing fast and convenient air transport services to the Philippines’ most beautiful destinations with a corporate office at Bonifacio Global City serving operations in Manila, Palawan and Cebu.

Catbalogan Buri Airport, which has a 1.2km concrete runway is already ready to accommodate land planes, which Air Juan will be using for its operation in Catbalogan and even turbo propeller planes that major airlines like Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines offer, as shared by CAAP Area Manager, Engr. Danilo Abareta.

Also revealed during the said meeting was the scheduled expansion of Catbalogan Buri Airport by 2018 as funded by CAAP, per instruction of Secretary Art Tugade of the Department of Transportation – Philippines(DOTr) as one of its priority projects.

The operationalization of Buri Airport comes at a perfect time since the city is set to host another international conference in December 2017 by the Team 54 Project.

In partnership with the Provincial Government of Samar, the said international conference is expected to gather more than 200 climate change leaders and advocates from across the globe and the highlight of which is the awarding of these changemakers and trailblazers in combatting and addressing the issue on climate change.

CAAP has been one of the significant partners of the city government especially with its first international conference hosting last April 2017, which was greatly acknowledged as the team gave out plaques issued by Mayor Step and from the UCLG ASPAC – United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific.

With majority of the things now set for the operationalization of Catbalogan Buri Airport, Mayor Step urges all Catbalogan to fully support this major endeavor and propel the city to greater heights… forward, farther, further.

Our very own City Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan was recently in Fuzhou, China to attend the 2017 UCLG ASPAC – United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific Council Meeting and was one of the panelist for the symposium on “Marine Economy and Urban Development”.

This was a follow-up to the conference held in Catbalogan City last April 2017 where many significant agreements were made and important new committees were forged that were geared towards sustainable development through mutual cooperations betweens cities and provinces across Asia and the Pacific.

“We are very honored to represent Catbalogan City to the UCLG ASPAC Executive Bureau Meeting as well as in the symposium with a topic that is very evident in Catbalogan – marine economy and urban development”, Mayor Step shares.

Mayor Step, being the Co-Chair for the Standing Committee on Women in Local Governments was tasked to lead the said committee in the Fuzhou Conference, which aims to empower women who are in key positions in local governments as well as encourage more participation of women local leaders especially in UCLG ASPAC targeting a 25% women participation.

UCLG ASPAC is the biggest of the 8 regional sections of UCLG, which is a worldwide association of local government organizations recognized by the United Nations and nominates 10 out of 20 members of the UNACLA – the first advisory body of local authorities affiliated with the UN.
