Catbalogan opens Eco Park prior to Earth Day 2018 celebration

As a prelude to the 2018 Earth Day celebration, the City Government of Catbalogan held its soft launching of the Cabugawan Eco Park at Barangay Cabugawan, Buri Island, this City last Saturday, April 21, 2018.

Led by no less than City Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan during the said soft launching, the eco park highlights the 3-hectare mangrove area made accessible through the 350-meter-boardwalk that stretches around the protected area with three gazebos, which will serve as a pitstop during eco-educational tours inside the park to be coordinated by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office.

The said eco park in Barangay Cabugawan will be managed by the barangay government and is part of the ecotourism program of the city through its Sustainable Tourism and Ecological Protection (STEP) Program under the Office of the City Tourism, Culture, Arts and Information.

The said program covers the whole island of Buri as included in the Buri Island Development Plan made in partnership with the Samar State University (SSU).

According to World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), mangroves and their ecosystem is important because they are home to a variety of marine life including plant species as well as a primary coastal protection for communities.

According to WWF, more than 35% of the world’s mangroves are already gone, which figures is as high as 50% in countries such as India, the Philippines, and Vietnam, while in the Americas they are being cleared at a rate faster than tropical rainforests.

With this effort of the city government to not just protect the mangroves but to emphasize and highlight its importance, the eco park will also be a source of livelihood and employment for residents of Barangay Cabugawan through this social enterprise.

Our very own City Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan was featured in the annual report for 2017 of the UCLG ASPAC – United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific under its highlights section for the topic “Women Leadership”.

Catbalogan City, being an active member of the network and after hosting the Executive Bureau (ExBu) Meeting and Asia Pacific Conference in Catbalogan City last April 2017, Mayor Step was elected as the Co-Chair for the Standing Committee of UCLG ASPAC.

UCLG is a worldwide association, and the only local government organization recognized by the United Nations. It nominates 10 out of 20 members of the United Nations Advisory Committee of Local Authorities (UNACLA), the first formal advisory body of local authorities affiliated with the UN.
