Mural Painting at Catbalogan I Central Elementary School

A city that values culture values its people.

Young students from various schools in Catbalogan flocked San Francisco Street last July 19, 2018 for the mural painting contest sponsored by the City Government of Catbalogan in celebration of the 2018 National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM), which was previously known as National Disaster Consciousness Month mandating all government agencies to conduct activities every month of July related to building disaster resilience.

The mural paints revolved around the four thematic areas of disaster resilience, namely: disaster prevention and mitigation, disaster preparedness, disaster response and disaster rehabilitation and recovery as anchored on this year’s NDRM theme “KATATAGAN SA KALAMIDAD ay Makakamtan Kapag Sapat ang Kaalaman sa Kahandaan”.

Colorful, thought provoking, creative, and unique are some of the descriptions of the judges after judging the entries, which was the second area for the mural painting contest organized.

“Damu it may mga creative talents hit mga kabataan dinhi ha Catbalogan ngan usa ini nga oportunidad para maipakita ngan maipahambog an mayda nira nga talento labi na gud an ira pag-intindi parte hit disaster resilience,” shares Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan.

How young people interpret current issues and how they are able to translate it to beautiful murals reflects much on our people’s culture and on how this generation sees the stories, the struggles, hopes and aspirations.

By providing them the spaces to speak, to express, and to participate is both a challenge and an opportunity for the government as well as the entirety of the society as duty bearers of this community.

By this activity, we were able to emphasize that there can be beauty in calamity but we must always ensure resilience in every experience.
