Catbalogan assists mussel farmers through livelihood

A three-day training on “Mussel Farming using Bamboo Raft/Longline Method” is being organized and facilitated by the City Agriculture Office and Samar State University College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (SSU-COFMAS).

This aims to include mussel farmers in their livelihood project and share knowledge on how mussels using longline culture method help the growth rate and survival of mussels.

Compared with the traditional stake method, mussel longline culture technology is more efficient as it can produce relatively higher production per unit area, superior quality mussels, and reduce siltation in mussel beds.

Participants of the said training are the Fisherfolks from Brgy. Ibol, Brgy. Pangdan (Madalunot and Calbasag), Brgy. Bunuanan, Brgy. Mercedes, Brgy. Maulong, and Brgy. Silanga, Catbalogan City.

Materials for mussel culture farm was distributed by no less than City Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan among the six (6) groups of fisherfolks wherein each group received the following:

1 roll Rope # 12
2 rolls Rope # 16
50 pcs Bamboo poles
33 pcs water jugs for mooring (sand, gravel & steel bars)
1 sack empty coconuts
