Catbalogan receives Xi’an, China delegation

Last September 07, 2019, a delegation from Xi’an City Government in China led by no less than their Mayor, Li Mingyuan arrived in Catbalogan City to seal a mutual intent for a friendly exchange partnership.

A fellowship dinner was hosted by the city government that featured the rich cultural heritage of Catbalogan in the performances and even in the cuisine served to the guests.

“This event will signal the building of a bridge for a possible transformation and development of our respective cities. A transformation from our old promising past to our developed future,” as shared by City Mayor Dexter Uy in his welcome message.

He further shared that partnering with Xi’an will become a “learning opportunity, an avenue to comprehend the strategies, systems, interventions and lessons that Xi’an have experienced in their years of existence and apply the same in our locality.”

Xi’an is the capital of Shaanxi province in the northwestern region of China and the starting point of the ancient Silk Road now being developed as the Belt and Road Initiative of the Chinese government, which aims to enhance regional connectivity between 152 countries and international organizations in Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas.

Xi’an is most famous for its Terracotta Warriors, which have become an international symbol of China’s history.

This sister city partnership between Catbalogan and Xi’an was made possible through then City Mayor now City Councilor Stephany Uy-Tan who sits as one of the Co-Presidents representing Women in Local Government of the United Cities and Local Governments Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) and as First Vice President of ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability Global Executive Committee for 2018-2021, which Catbalogan City is a member of.

This is Catbalogan’s second friendly partnership, which the first was in 2017 with Nanning City, China during Catbalogan’s hosting of the UCLG ASPAC Conference and Executive Bureau Meeting.
