Divers visit Catbalogan and Daram

A two-man team from Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving (PCSSD) as assisted by the Department of Tourism – Regional Office VIII visited Catbalogan City last May 15, 2012.

The team visited some Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) near the city and in the municipality of Daram. It was part of their “Buhay Dagat Program”, which was aimed to provide a viable livelihood opportunity for people  directly involved in the monitoring and management of MPAs and provide an excellent motivation for their continued involvement in its protection.  It is also aims to make Marine Protected Areas as learning venues for tourists who need to be educated about the coastal environment and the concept of responsible tourism.

The project objective of the project is to add livelihood component in the Coastal Resource  Management (CRM) process through a community – based enterprise; thus, contribution to poverty alleviation in the coastal area.

Their visit was part of the three-day leg around the region that identified possible sites that included those in Limasawa Island, Guiuan, Marabut, Catbalogan and Daram, Samar.
