Farmers graduate from Season-long Training on Banana Production

Banana is identified priority commodity grown by most of our farmers in the country. It is considered as one of the top rank staple food consumed by our marginal families in the Philippines. Banana also contributes significantly to our economy. New technologies are introduced to increase its production and income.

a 16-week season-long Training of Trainers on Good Agricultural Practices for Banana (TOT on GAP Banana) was conducted last March 09 to July 03, 2015 in Catbalogan City by the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center VIII at VSU VISCA Baybay City, Leyte. ATI spearheaded the training which was participated by 27 agriculture technical personnel from the different municipalities of Samar, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar and Leyte.

As part of the training module, 156 farmers from Barangays Iguid (30), New Mahayag (30), Old Mahayag (22), San Andres (40) and San Vicente (28) were given the chance to attend Farmers Field School (FFS) Season-long Training on GAP Banana.

Farmers were given lectures and practicum activities by the ATs assigned to the 5 priority barangays for a more effective learning on banana production through topics on banana varieties; propagation of bananas through conventional method using suckers and corms and tissue culture; integrated pest management – its prevention and cure; field planting and cultural management – from land preparation design, intercropping, weed growth control, increase soil fertility, reduction of soil erosion, augmentation of income; and harvest and post-harvest practices.

“An pag-uma an usa nga livelihood nga naabuyon ha aton ginduduso nga kampanya ha pagpreserba ngan pagprotihir han aton kalibungan. An pag-undong hini an usa nga epektibo nga pamaagi han pag-address han natikaseryoso nga isyu han climate change. Let us therefore make sustainability, resource management and equity as our primary goals in applying what we have learned from this training.” Mayor Step shares during the graduation ceremony.
