Local AIDS Council convenes for WAD 2016

Human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV and AIDS) is a spectrum of conditions that is a global pandemic.

The City Government of Catbalogan thru our Local AIDS Council (LAC) convened for a meeting as called for by Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan on November 24, 2016 to prepare for the 2016 World AIDS Day (WAD) commemoration, an internationally recognized day to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, reduce stigma and discrimination, and commemorate those who have died from the disease.

The sectoral council identified several activities ranging from media campaign, exhibits, parade, medical mission, concert and other advocacy campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the disease and how to protect oneself.

This year’s theme according to UNAIDS is “Hands up for #HIVprevention” as an effort to restrengthen the efforts on HIV prevention.

The UNAIDS Prevention gap report shows that worldwide an estimated 1.9 million adults have become infected with HIV every yearfor at least the past ve years and that the number of new HIV infections is rising in some regions. The report shows that HIV prevention efforts must be reinvigorated if the world is to stay on the Fast-Track to ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.
