Manaragat Festival selected for international award

There were 99 candidates around the world that were selected for the 2017-2018 edition of the International Award ‘UCLG – MEXICO CITY – Culture 21’ and Catbalogan City’s Manaragat Festival was one of the two finalists from the Philippines that were shortlisted.

The international award recognizes leading cities and individuals that have distinguished themselves through their contribution to culture as a key dimension in sustainable cities.

The said award has two categories: the City / Local or Regional Government Award and the Individual Award.

The first category recognises a city, local or regional government the cultural policy of which has contributed significantly to linking the values of culture (heritage, diversity, creativity and transmission of knowledge) with democratic governance, citizen participation and sustainable development, while the second category recognizes an internationally renowned individual who has made a fundamental contribution to the relationship between culture and sustainable development.

This achievement was made possible through City Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan who has been representing Catbalogan City in various international conferences and has even presented the Manaragat experience during the 2nd UCLG Culture Summit held last May 2017 in Jeju, South Korea.

This year marks the 15th Manaragat Festival month-long fiesta celebration, which was originally started in 2004 during the term of then Mayor Coefredo “Tekwa” Uy and was continued and strengthened by the current administration of Mayor Step through the Office of the City Tourism, Culture, Arts and Information.

Manaragat Festival is conducted yearly during the whole month of August to coincide with the feast day of Patron Saint, Señor San Bartolome, which falls on the 24th of August and was originally a religious celebration and later became a cultural event and now a convergence that advocates for environmental protection and cultural preservation.

Viva Manaragat!
