Through the invitation of the Department of Trade and Industry, City Mayor Stephany Uy – Tan delivered a welcome address to the participants of the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Roving Academy last October 8, 2014 at the Hotel San Francisco, this city.

She took this opportunity to thank the so-called “backbones of our economy” for their role in bringing about economic development in the city. “It is through your passion and perseverance to set up your own businesses that our city has gained its economic edge over the rest of Samar Island” she said. She also thanked the resource person, Mr. John Paul Lanot, for sharing to the participants his knowledge on how to start and maintain a successful business.

Lanot has gained popularity for his trendy food establishments like the Pino Restaurant located at Jupiter St., Makati and The BRGR Project. In her speech, Mayor Step lauded the participants’ attendance to the said training because it speaks of their efforts to improve their respective businesses, saying that their success will eventually bear positive results for the city’s economy. She also expressed her pleasure that the SME sector’s desire to improve their business is complimentary to the City Government’s moves to create a business-conducive atmosphere. “Tila kasi nagkatugma-tugma ang ating mga plano. Habang pinagsusumikapan ninyong mapabuti pa ang inyong mga negosyo, dito naman po sa aming panig ng LGU ay ang pagpursige upang ang Catbalogan City ay magkaroon ng tinatawag na “business-friendly environment,” according to her.

These statements were followed with an accounting of the steps being undertaken by the City Government to ensure their success. She said that these initiatives are meant to show them that they have the local government’s full support. “Given the mutual benefits that we are likely to receive from a booming local economy, perhaps now is the time to for us to raise our aspirations and work together for a common goal. Let that goal be a competitive and empowered SME sector leading our path towards progress”, were her parting words.
