Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan issues press statement on BIR Catbalogan Transfer

I would like to assure everybody that the City Government is doing everything in its power to retain the office of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) here in Catbalogan City. For the information of everybody, this issue started last year and interventions were made by then mayor now 1st Councilor Hon. Coefredo T. Uy to address this and block its impending transfer.

With the matter of the failure of bidding that recently occurred, the issue has resurfaced with the blame being pointed at the current administration.

Two weeks before said failure of bidding happened, we had the chance to talk with our new Revenue District Officer Mr. Conrado Tangkia regarding this matter when he made his courtesy call to us and I have asked his help on what should be done. At some point, I have even expressed that if necessary; I am willing to talk to

a higher official from the National Office to help us in this plight.

We have since sent a formal letter to BIR Commisioner Kim Henares to appeal to her to hear our justifications for opposing this transfer, which included the opposition of our local business sector as well as other municipalities who find a trip to Catbalogan City for their BIR-related transactions more convenient than a trip to Calbayog City for the same purposes.

If the business sector wants to retain BIR, if the national investors investing in our city wants to retain BIR, how much more ako nga Catbaloganon ngan nanay han syudad, nga an hingyap an makahatag hin maupay nga serbisyo para han ngatanan para mapadayon an pag uswag han Catbalogan? We believe that retaining the BIR Office in Catbalogan City is advantageous to us not only because it will ensure efficient and quality services but also because its presence is instrumental to the economic growth of our city.

Keeping the BIR in Catbalogan City is among the top priorities of my administration as it complements our thrust of bringing economic development. We are not taking this for granted. At this point I would like to appeal for everybody’s patience, understanding and support in tackling this problem. Let us not be sidetracked by the negativity and instead work together and focus on our ultimate goal of making Catbalogan City a Local Government Unit that is progressive and responsive to the needs of its people.
