Mister and Miss Manaragat candidates join mangrove planting activity

Organized by the Catbalogan Fiesta 2019 Hermano Mayor, Mr. Manuel Van Torrevillas of the feast of Patron Saint, Señor San Bartolome, a mangrove planting was held early this morning at Cabugawan Eco Park at Barangay Cabugawan, Buri Island.

As part of their advocacy on environmental protection, candidates of Mister Manaragat: The Search for Mister Catbalogan City and Miss Manaragat: The Search for Miss Catbalogan City 2019 actively joined the planting of more than 2,000 mangrove shoot at the said eco park.

Mangroves help protect shorelines during storms or floods and serves as valuable nursery areas for fishes and other marine species.

According to the World Wide Fund (WWF), like coral reefs, mangrove forests are extremely productive ecosystems that provide numerous good and services both to the marine environment and people.

Same as in the case of Barangay Cabugawan, their mangrove area has been developed into an eco park with a boardwalk serving as observation decks that promotes the importance of mangroves as well as helping the community as an alternative livelihood brought by ecotourism.

This was the project of then City Mayor now @City City Councilor Stephany Uy-Tan in creating the whole Buri Island through the Sustainable Tourism and Ecological Protection Program.
