“Let us make every child smile
this Christmas…”
December 15-23, 2013

Last November 08, 2013, Typhoon Yolanda hit the Philippines with the Eaastern Visayas getting the most number of damages and casualties while injuring and displacing many more from their homes. The said typhoon also ruined many businesses and agricultural properties depriving numerous residents of their livelihood.

With the devastation wrought by the typhoon, the City Government of Catbalogan responded out of a sense of civic duty to its brothers and sisters in the region. We were the first to deploy an Emergency Response Team including rescuers and medical personnel in Tacloban City a day after the storm surge. We launched the #SalbarSamar (SAVE SAMAR) to be able to expand our help to more devastated areas particularly in the Samar Island (Western and Eastern Samar). Since then, this campaign has served as our mindset not just in giving relief goods, conducting feedings and medical missions to the concerned areas, but also in coordinating with organizations, NGOs, private individuals and LGUs for their donations to ensure that these will directly reach the recipients.

During our repeated relief operation to all the towns in Western and Eastern Samar that were greatly affected, we realized that the CHILDREN survivors need more special attention. More than the relief goods to cover their basic needs, they are also in need of comfort, reassurance and extra care. To help them cope with the trauma as well as the tragic aftermath, they need a friend’s touch.

Christmas season, we hope to take the initial steps towards the healing of the children in affected areas by spreading the spirit of compassion, happiness and sharing by launching the “Pasko Caravan: 9 Days of Joy and Smile”, this December 15 to 23, 2013. This 9-day affair will feature a mini-concert featuring various artists, a toy-giving moment with Santa Claus, a puppet show and medical mission; to be held in various typhoon-affected municipalities.

While we are aware that toys and cards do not count as pressing necessities, we still believe that through a small act of giving or a few words of comfort, we are filling a deeper hunger for hope and that by doing so, we are helping them move on from this incident and grow up with a more positive outlook in life.

Hence, we are appealing to you and your company/organization to be a part of this endeavor through toy donations of stuffed toys and balls whether old or new. Together, let us make every child smile this Christmas…
