Youth opens City’s Charter Day Celebration

An event that caters to young sports enthusiasts jumpstarted the 15-day opening salvo for the 2nd Charter Day Celebration of Catbalogan City. The Catbalogan City Basketball Tournament formally opened with a simple ceremony last June 1, 2012 at the Samar Sports Complex. In attendance during this event were city officials led by City Vice Mayor Art Sherwin Gabon, Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation Officials led by its president Hon. Dexter M. Uy.

The basketball tournament was opened to amateur players aged 21 years old and below. Players were given free t-shirts and were not required to pay a registration fee. Thirty three (33) teams will be vying for the championship prize of PhP 15,000. The second and third finishers are to receive PhP 10,000 to PhP 8,000 respectively. All three top teams are also to receive a trophy aside from their prize money.

Aside from Vice Mayor Gabon, City Councilors Stephany Uy-Tan and Jovito Redaja were also present to express their support for the said undertaking and appeal for sportsmanship in the conduct of the game. A former PBA player himself, Redaja attended the event as Vice-Chair of the City Council’s Committee on Youth and Sports Development, where Uy-Tan also sits as one of the members. The said committee is being headed by the current SK Federation President, Dexter Uy, who delivered the welcome remarks during the opening program. While the City Government sponsored the tournament, the SK Federation was responsible for the information dissemination and registration of players
